Although root beer is made from sassafras roots, sarsparilla is named from the root of its primary ingredient, the wild sarsparilla or Smilax ornata plant. According to a 2019 study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, sarsparilla was believed to relieve arthritis and other rheumatic pain. Like many soft drinks, it started life as a patent medicine.
