Amidst a challenging football season in 1924, UNC sought a mascot like N.C. State’s wolf or Georgia’s bulldog. The notion of a ram arose from star fullback Jack Merritt’s nickname, “Battering Ram.” Head cheerleader Vic Huggins proposed the Ram idea to Charles T. Woollen, the athletic business manager, who greenlit it. With $25, Huggins acquired “Rameses” the First from Texas. The ram arrived in time for a spirited pep rally.
