Elton John
Retry Correct Incorrect For the most part, the biggest hits of 1972 were deeply heartfelt ballads from acclaimed singer-songwriters and many of them have since risen to immortality. Whether it’s the spacefaring loneliness or “Rocket Man,” the tender, lovelorn “Heart Of Gold,” or the bittersweet nostalgia of “American Pie,” all of these songs speak to big, universal emotions. Granted, so does Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out,” though it has a widely different tone from the others listed here.
