According to Scientific American, scientists have long considered chimpanzees self-aware because they’ve recognized nits and gnats on their bodies from their mirror images. Since chimpanzees are known to be adept tool users and attentive at grooming themselves (and each other), those traits came together to recognize the mirror’s utility. And in the process, they proved they recognized themselves.
